In the most basic terms, a programmable logic controller (PLC) is a computer that’s equipped with a microprocessor, but has no keyboard, mouse, or monitor. Though this description might make it seem like PLCs suffer from limited functionality, quite the opposite is true. In fact, PLCs are built to drive the most complicated manufacturing processes and withstand very harsh industrial environments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly become a hot topic of conversation, no doubt as a result of our fascination with the technology. And even though the potential benefits to the human race seem limitless, there are those who caution against widespread adoption of the technology. AI, after all, is often linked to the understandable concern that it threatens to reduce opportunities in the manufacturing sector for the human workforce. 

The emergence of the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) heralded a new age of manufacturing. Processes on the factory floor became more automated, more precise, and less costly, which in turn meant a greater quantity of better produced goods for the end consumer at a cheaper price.

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) were invented in 1968 and have played a prominent role in manufacturing operations ever since.  PLCs are essentially industrial solid-state computers that monitor inputs and outputs, and makes logic-based decisions for automated processes or machines.
